The cols du Glandon and de la Croix de Fer, dominated by the Etendard peak, are a high point in the Alps, linking the Savoyard valleys of Les Villards and Arvan to the Eau d'Olle valley.
The Col de la Croix de Fer, at an altitude of 2,067 metres, lies on the boundary between the Grandes Rousses massif and the Arves, in the commune of St Sorlin d'Arves. 
A major cycling venue and a pass not included in the Tour de France category, it links Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to the northeast and Bourg-d'Oisans to the south, i.e. the Maurienne and Romanche valleys, passing close to the Col du Glandon.

The Col de la Croix de Fer, a little history:

Formerly known as the Col d'Olle because of its location in the Combe d'Olle, the source of the Eau d'Olle river, the only mule track that crossed the pass for several centuries was finally transformed into a road: first in 1900 from Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves to the pass, then in 1912 for its extension to the Col du Glandon. The road was inaugurated on July 14, 1912. The Col de la Croix de Fer also replaces the mule track over the Col d'Arves and Fontcouverte.
